Criminal Law Associate
Criminal Defence | $90,000–$100,000 + Benefits | New Zealand
CRE8 Talent is recruiting an Associate with strong Criminal Law experience and PAL2 Legal Aid accreditation, or someone very close to achieving it.
This is an opportunity for an experienced Criminal Lawyer to take the next step professionally while contributing to the ongoing development and growth of a law firm.
The role
The position will involve managing a criminal law practice, undertaking complex criminal matters and contributing to the wider legal team.
Responsibilities will include:
Managing criminal defence files from instruction through to resolution.
Representing clients in criminal proceedings.
Preparing matters for defended hearings and jury trials.
Providing strategic legal advice and managing client expectations.
Working across Legal Aid matters.
Supporting and mentoring junior lawyers.
Contributing to the development of the firm's criminal practice.
What we're looking for
Ideally 2–3 years' post-qualification experience.
PAL2 Legal Aid accreditation, or very close to achieving it.
Experience completing at least three jury trials, consistent with PAL2 requirements.
Strong criminal litigation and advocacy experience.
Confidence managing complex files and court proceedings.
An ability to work collaboratively and support junior members of the team.
An interest in contributing to the wider development of the firm.

For an Associate looking to progress towards PAL3, there is an opportunity to continue building experience and working towards that next accreditation level.
Equally, someone comfortable practicing at PAL2 and wanting to consolidate their experience is equally welcome.
